We are always touching something

We are always touching something.

We touch things, people, ideas, archetypes, sounds, substances, sensations, thoughts, the infinite and the indescribable.

Everything we do, we do within an ocean of touch.

We are never not touching something.

I say this to draw your attention to the plain truth that may be hidden from you. It can be hard to see the things right in front of our face. Sit down too long and our arse goes numb. Believe something long enough and we map it to our identity.

Bump! Gurdieff is quoted as saying that rising on the octave of consciousness required ‘jolts’ at certain intervals. I never understood that until now. When we have become acclimatized to our current contact, we need a change in that contact to feel beyond what is to what has always been.

Words are spells, literally and figuratively. I’m pointing at the stars. What are those lights I see? Do you see them too? Do you notice the touch between you and those lights? In this case the stars are the flickering lights of whatever screen you’re viewing these words on. Unless you print off this page and reading it in the physical. Respect if you are. I got through half of my masters degree that way.

My point is to bump you. To jolt you. To help you feel what has always been here. The sea of contact that you and I live in. It’s all around us. It is inside us, too. There is no seeming end to this contact soup.

Allow me to illustrate.

However you’re reading these words, they are somehow “entering” you. The form and shape of these squiggles we call language is interacting with you in such a way as you can see and register their existence. THESE WORDS ARE TOUCHING YOU AND YOU ARE TOUCHING THEM.

Let’s go one step further: as you see these words, you comprehend them. You partake of making meaning from them. You are touching language. Further back, you are touching the society that taught you that language. You are in touch with the cultural artifact that is language itself. You and I are both linked into the world history of sound, meaning, shape, form, words, language, and all that leads to and comes from THAT!

One of the reasons I LOVE to go into the bush and sit down, without podcasts, without books, with just myself and the world, is because I “lose touch” with this world of language. I open my awareness to the touch my body is making with the world that is non-verbal | pre-verbal & post-verbal.

Let’s go there now together. Let’s for 30 seconds break from the momentum of my writing and your reading. We’ll come back soon but for now let us “simply” sit and notice the world through the non-verbal witnessing of our body.

Welcome back to you.

Check-in time: I became aware of the front of my body. My breathing became more in focus. I relaxed some muscular tension. What did you notice?

Whatever you noticed, THAT was what you were in touch with. Were you noticing that before? Likely not. Likely the act of reading was occluding your sense of the background touch-scape.

We move in and out of touch-scapes all the time. I mean as far as our conscious awareness is concerned. Those touch-scapes continue manifesting even if we are not aware of them. We still have embodiment even if we temporarily lose track of our truck, torso, limbs as we engage in some task like reading. Similarly, we are always engaged in a psychic soup of touch, whether we realize it or not.

By psychic, I mean the realm of thought, emotion, meaning & spirit. We are always touching God for example. Whether we feel it or not. God is All. The All is God. The dance of light and sound is the play of contrast, separation and distinction. And it all takes place within and as the Mind, Heart and Body of God.

Let’s take your psychic meaning-scape for example. Where are you right now? Look around and notice the place that you are in. Why are you there? What are you hoping to achieve/create/express/avoid by being there? Though perhaps invisible and unknown at first, the answers to these questions are psychic phenomena that you are in touch with right now. Keep asking those questions and see where you end up. See what you touch in your psyche along the way. Where do you end up when you examine the whys & whats of your doing? These mental|emotional physic phenomena are an indelible part of your touchspace wherever you go, whatever you do and however you do it.

The how of our doing is another touch we make. The speed with which we do, the emotion we carry in our heart and mind carries over to our musculature. If we’re in a rush for example, that is because we have a sense of time: we are in touch with time. Beyond that, we are in touch with our desire and our desire for what we want to happen or achieve within a certain span of time. There is a hidden realm of psychic terrain lurking behind our time-based behavior that is part of our greater touch-scape. We may have set out walking through our lives from the touch of a single psychic idea years ago. Maybe it’s something like, “when this is over, then I can rest. Until then I work”. If I were to translate that into bodyTALK it might be,

“GOGODON’TSTOPGOGODON’TSTOPGOGODON’TSTOPthere’ssomethingreallybadsomethingreallybadsomethingreallybadMIGHTHAPPENMIGHTHAPPENMIGHTHAPPENDIDHAPPENDIDHAPPENDIDHAPPENISHAPPENINGISHAPPENINGISHAPPENING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

or maybe it’s,

“OOHCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDY!!!!!!!!!!!OOHCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDY!!!!!!!!!!!OOHCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDY!!!!!!!!!!!OOHCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDYCANDY!!!!!!!!!!!”

In making deeper contact with our psychic and physical touch-scapes we can become aware of the WHAT, WHY & HOW of our actions & choices. We can start to become aware of our true motivations and see how they interact and influence our body movements, tensions, choices and options.

I’m making a study of myself through my psychic|physical touchscape. I seek to know myself better. I seek to know this realm better. I want to know what this place is. I want to make contact. MakecontactmakecontactmakecontactFEELFEELFEELFEELFEELFEEL….

…and lose myself in the place beyond words. Find myself in the realm of being. Grow through and into and with this organic, unfolding organism that is the touch-soup that we call life.

At the end of the day, the best words point beyond themselves, to the experiential realm and the hiding place of God.

    1. Joshto, So true – we are always touching God. Thanks for adding that perspective. And I like how you say it all takes place in and as the Mind, Heart & body of God. Very good. I am experiencing that more and more – the touch of God. I was sitting outside the other day watching the sunlight and noticing I felt immersed in God. The touch of the light was the touch of Him.
